The Burning Questions

Smoking

Introduction

The biggest thing anyone can do to live a long, healthy life is not smoke.

Smoking has more than 50 ways of making life a misery through illness and more than 20 ways of killing you. Half of those that carry on smoking will die from diseases caused by tobacco, and most will lose, on average, 21 years of life.

Most people used to smoke - now only 25% do. Thousands have given up, helping themselves and those around them. Do you want help to give up? Click here.

Bad for your health

Everyone knows the health risks of smoking. Lung cancer and emphysema would hardly exist if no one smoked and a quarter of all heart attacks are caused by smoking. If you want to know more visit the Ash Wales (opens new window) web site.

Passive Smoking (sometimes called second-hand or environmental tobacco smoke)

We also know smoke is bad for those around us, especially children, babies and those we live and work with. Do you want to know more about passive smoke in pregnancy and beyond? Then take a look at this BBC Ask the Doctor (opens new window) page.

Smoke Free Workplaces

All workplaces and enclosed public places are now smoke free, saving an estimated 400 lives at work in Wales every year.
